The New American Magazine List Items

The New American Magazine was established in September 1985. It was named from a speech entitled the New Americanism delivered by Mr. Welch. That speech is available in the book by the same title within this library. The mission of the magazine was to consolidate the cost and effort of publishing two periodicals into one format that could be branded as an alternative to main stream newststand periodicals. As such, the layout of the magazine was similar to that of Time but with authentic reporting. It started out as a weekly, and Volume I includes 14 issues starting September 30 with a layout of 64 pages. The layout was reduced to 48 pages for Vol II and in April of 1986 the publishing schedule was changed to every two weeks but the layout was increased back to 64 pages. The bi-weekly schedule was a resonable compromise considering it replaced two publications; one a Weekly and one a Monthly. For these reasons, Volume II has 31 issues. From 1987 thru 2009 the bi-weekly schedule resulted in 26 issues most years with a 27th issue in two of the Volumes. In April 1989 the magazine returned to a *48 page format. In 2010, the publishing schedule changed again. This time a bi-monthly publishing schedule was chosen. This reduced the number of isues to 24 per year. The magazine is now in its 38th year of publishing and at the conclusion of 2022 the collection will total 957 issues not including a few 2nd and 3rd edition re-issues with expanded content.
